...Ha.
During the week, I usually eat far better than this journal implies. Where other people have stated that the reason for their poor eating habits is that they're always on the run, mine are actually for the opposite reason.
On the weekends, I'm usually stuck in my house all day - especially in the winter. Even when I'm being social, people typically come to my house to hang out, so I never have much reason to leave. If I were to leave, almost all of my friends live within a 5-minute walk of my house. I don't have a car either, and consequently never have groceries in the house. I do, however, live 2 doors away from a convenience store, and often find myself running in there for snacks or pizza on the weekends when I'm too lazy to go anywhere.
During the week, I'm on-the-go and usually eat more frequent, smaller-portioned meals (that consist of more than junk food). Because I'm running around all day, I eat out, but not excessively. During the weekend, however, I am awfully gluttonous and eat whatever I want, whenever I want it. Maybe I see it as a reward or something, but I think it mostly comes from having an empty cupboard.
No judgments! When I lived near campus I would always do the same thing regarding grocery shopping. I lived in Dinnaken for a few years and got all my groceries at the Harvard Market one block down. When I lived in Marcy Holmes I would go to the corner store (also a Hookah restaurant) on 4th ave and 8th st. Your weekend diet was very similar to mine.
ReplyDeleteI agree with David - no judging here! My food log was definitely not a good indicator of my usual food habits. It seems to be the trend that no matter how healthy one eats during the week, how food conscious one is during the daily routine of the week, the weekend is a time for lazy eating and eating anything that can be cooked quickly or microwaved. Or even (unfortunately) fast food.
ReplyDeleteBesides, the weekend is no time to be grocery shopping or doing any productive errands! It would be interesting to try and compare a week's worth of eating versus one weekend of food intake. There would be some super interesting differences, on average.
And I"m with you there on not having a car and needing to eat things close - living in Dinkytown means that instead of trying to catch a bus to get some real food from a grocery store, why not just walk over to Jimmy John's or Qdoba and eat a huge meal?
You and I eat have very similar diets! Like me you don't take a lot of time to sit down and have meals and what you do eat isn't the healthiest. In high school I used to eat much healthier, but there is just something about college life that makes it so much harder to make smart food choices. I simply don't have the time. I'm glad to know I'm not alone in my less than healthy diet though!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't judge! I am sure many of us have had similar habits at some time. Did you realize it before you blogged it? I didn't realize mine.
ReplyDeleteI think even if I lived in Dinkytown, I'd still eat at home. It's too expensive to eat out all the time. "living like a college student" usually means running out of money before the next check comes. Fortunately, I don't have to do that since I am in my 30s, but I did in the Navy so I can sympathize. But, even on my current budget, those tabs would add up awful. And if you are young, your body can probably handle pizza and candy!
Side note - I hate all of you for you drinking. I really miss beer.
Definitely can't judge a college student on their eating habits. I was lucky as I've recently changed my eating habits pretty drastically in order to put on a bit more weight (muscle, not fat). Having a car makes a world of difference when it comes to being able to get food that doesn't come in a can. Do you have a kitchen? I know that was one of the issues I also faced before moving to my current location. No kitchen limits you to microwaves and non-perishables that don't require anything more complicated than what a water heater can give you.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, if you were looking for more ways to put variety in your diet (which you may not be) there are a lot of good and rather easy options to do so, some even easier and cheaper than frozen pizzas. Regardless, it is amazing how easy our diets are altered depending on what is available to us within reason.
