No joy for soy (not a blog assignment)

This article makes many claims about soy being dangerous, with heavy anti-GMO tones. I also see a lot of "studies show" and "according to Dr." all without citations or even naming research groups or publications.
Wondering what others think about 1.) the claims 2.) how scholarly it is

Food Journal

-I edited this after realizing how little I'd actually said about my eating habits.-

Oh, god.
This weekend has been nothing but pizza and candy.
Don't judge me, jerks.

Late afternoon - Totino's Pepperoni Pizza (8'')
Evening - Berry Blast Chewy Sprees (2 bags)
Night - Peach Schnapps, brandy, Monster energy drink

Saturday:

All day - Water, 2/3 of a cheese pizza from Mesa (20'')
Early evening - Berry Blast Chewy Sprees (1 bag)

Sunday:

All day - Water
Noonish - Tortilla chips and Queso dip (half a bag / half a jar)
Evening - Totino's Cheese Pizza (8'')
Night - Skittles Crazy Cores (1 bag), Chewy Sprees (1 bag), Deli Mustart Gardetto's (1 bag)

...Ha.

During the week, I usually eat far better than this journal implies. Where other people have stated that the reason for their poor eating habits is that they're always on the run, mine are actually for the opposite reason.

On the weekends, I'm usually stuck in my house all day - especially in the winter. Even when I'm being social, people typically come to my house to hang out, so I never have much reason to leave. If I were to leave, almost all of my friends live within a 5-minute walk of my house. I don't have a car either, and consequently never have groceries in the house. I do, however, live 2 doors away from a convenience store, and often find myself running in there for snacks or pizza on the weekends when I'm too lazy to go anywhere.

During the week, I'm on-the-go and usually eat more frequent, smaller-portioned meals (that consist of more than junk food). Because I'm running around all day, I eat out, but not excessively. During the weekend, however, I am awfully gluttonous and eat whatever I want, whenever I want it. Maybe I see it as a reward or something, but I think it mostly comes from having an empty cupboard.

I know this is super late, but please consider being extremely generous and grading it anyway :].

Thank you!

http://www.bonkersinstitute.org/medshow/kidhandful.html

This article discusses the use of Thioridazine as a treatment for hyperactivity in children.

If one were to completely exclude the argument of hyperactivity being a natural and fully normative behavioral trait in many children, this article still wreaks of (as is unfortunately commonplace for brand-name pharmaceuticals) unconcerned and questionable marketing.

For starters, the sidebar clearly states that Mellaril is intended for "short-term treatment" in hyperactive children, though the drug's bulleted qualities mostly pertain to the lack of side-effects that would be found in long-term usage of Mellaril's competitors, which implies similar frequency of dosage between them.

Secondly, the article brags that, unlike other similar products on the market, Thioridazine is safe for children as young as two years of age. It is disgusting to unnecessarily drug an unaware toddler for any reason, let alone for the purpose of correcting behavioral characteristics that are (at least) occasionally found in all healthy children of that age. In addition and relation to this point, the sidebar claims that this drug is a "treatment... [for] children who show excessive motor activity," but motor and cognitive functions are still extremely early in development for children of that age, and frequent exercise of both should be strongly encouraged.

Lastly, a perk of Mellaril is that its "Dosage [is] easily adjusted," which, as a parent, implies moderate security in upping the dosage for those days when your child is exceptionally unbearable, but in the smaller text of the article, it is implied that an overdose is possible in portions only moderately over the recommended daily allowance. That said, while we are discussing unnecessary dangers of Thioridazine, not only is there a ridiculous number of side-effects (the list of which takes up the majority of the text in the article), but included in those possible side-effects are restlessness, motor restlessness, and - seriously - hyperactivity. God.

Food Journal

Wednesday

9:00 AM
3 slices of whole grain bread (Natural Ovens) with almond butter (MaraNatha). I eat at home before I drive to school. Usually I watch an episode of a sitcom or read the newspaper. I eat this whole grain bread for the fiber and because I like the way it tastes. I used to eat the bread with peanut butter but I switched to almond butter to try something new. Also, I get sick(er) if I eat it at any other time of the day.

I drink a few glasses of water and take my digestive enzymes, multi-probiotic, ginger root, GABA, and a daily vitamin (Twinlab).

12:00 PM
A footlong sub at Subway. Wheat bread, turkey, American cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach. Water from my bottle and a multi-probiotic. I have found that on my days with fewer classes (Mondays & Wednesdays) it has become easier for me to eat a healthier lunch (I usually grab a slice or two of pizza at Mesa Pizza).

3:30 PM
Munched on a few Girl Scout cookies – Trefoils. Glass of Naked Juice – Green Machine. I drink that juice for the fruit. I know it is not the same as eating fruit, but I cannot digest a lot of fruits well. Plus, I find the juice absolutely delicious.

6:00 PM
At home, a large salad with a variety of leaves, some lite-caesar dressing (Ken’s Steak House Dressing), almonds, chicken strips (Kirkland). A few glasses of water. Mulit-probiotic. GABA.

Thursday

8:30 AM
At home, 3 slices of whole grain bread (Natural Ovens) with almond butter (MaraNatha).

Water with the same pills as Wednesday.

12:15 PM
A slice and a half (saved the other half) of cheese pizza at Mesa Pizza. Water, multi-probiotic.

2:45 PM
In class, munched on Triscuits (Nabisco). Was curious about the ingredients: whole grain soft white winter wheat, soybean oil, salt. Huh. The healthiest Nabisco product?

More water.

4:30 PM
At home, the other half of the slice of cheese pizza. Glass of Naked Juice – Blue Machine. Water, multi-probiotic.

7:00 PM
Home, same salad as Wednesday. A few glasses of water.

Friday

10:00 AM
At home, 3 slices of whole grain bread (Natural Ovens) with almond butter (MaraNatha). My classes begin later on Fridays so I can sleep in a little. Same water, same pills.

1:30 PM
Meet friend for lunch at that Thai restaurant in Stadium Village. I ate the Pad Thai with mock duck and a fortune cookie. Water with multi-probiotic, GABA.

4:00 PM
Stayed on campus to study and munched on Triscuits. More water.

6:30 PM
At home, bowl of mac and cheese (Annie’s). Some strawberries and a smaller version of my usual salad. More water, multi-probiotic, GABA.

*All the water I drink from my bottle is filtered tap water.

What I Eat

I didn't record water because I drink a lot of water throughout the day.

Friday

I had some grainy bar with flax seed, sunflower seed, granola (I think) and dried fruit with coffee.

Then I went to work and had a bunch of pizza – maybe three slices. I don't know anything about it because it was donated. I had some hot dish that one of my clients made a little later.

I also had a BUNCH of coffee. I don't want to think about how much because it hurts my feelings. I also don't want to think about how much alcohol I consumed on Friday night because that would also hurt my feelings. It should not be legal for my coworkers and I to get together after midnight for wine because it does not end well for ANYONE.

Saturday

I did not attempt to eat breakfast on Saturday because even though I probably needed it, it was such a gross idea.

I had an apple sometime in the early afternoon and I had some toast.

I made my little sister go out for sushi with me. I had two avocado rolls.

Then I had some green tea before engaging in merry-making with my roommates. I made a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato (If I buy a tomato at all out of season, I get them from Whole Foods because they have an agreement with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers).

Sunday

Today I had Chinese food at the mall with my mom. And I they gave me so much Chinese food at the mall that I ate it twice.

And now I'm drinking way too much coffee!

Food Log: 3/4-3/6

I really tried hard to document everything that I ate and the ingredients in them so my food log has gotten pretty lengthy. Sometimes if I ate something more than once I put the ingredients at the bottom of my entry.

Friday:

Breakfast: Bagel with egg and Kraft American cheese, Coffee with creamer, a glass of pineapple-orange juice

Where: my apartment

When: approx. 9:00AM

Why: I always need a cup of coffee to start my days, and Fridays I usually have a special breakfast because I have time in the morning to cook.

Lunch: Breyer’s parfait yogurt with strawberries and granola, Grape Cranberry Juice, and a Chewy Bar

Where: Coffman Union

When: approx. 2:00PM

Why: I was in a time crunch and I forgot to pack a lunch like I normally do. So I had to spend way too much money on a fairly simple lunch. I was also trying to stay away from the Orange Chicken and Pizza in the food court so I opted for the yogurt and granola bar instead. This isn’t a normal thing for me, I usually have soup or a salad for lunch during the week.

Dinner: Punjab eggplant with chicken and rice, a can of Miller light , glass of water

Where: my apartment

When: around 5:45PM

Why: I get really bored of eating the same types of meals every night, and like to explore different types of dishes. Growing up, my father loved to try new recipes and I often ate meals made with curry and other spices. Now I love spicy foods, but have only recently tried to make dishes incorporating different spices. It’s a lot of fun to explore all the different dishes you can make and the different flavors you can create by mixing spices together. I had a Miller because I’m from Wisconsin, and my friends and I were celebrating my roommate’s dance performance in the spring concert.

  • Punjab ingredients: eggplant tomatoes, onions, sunflower oil, garlic, salt, coriander, chilies, ginger, cumin, turmeric, cloves.
  • Minute Maid® Cranberry Grape ingredients: filtered water, sweetness ( high fructose corn syrup, sugar0, apple, cranberry and grape juices from concentrate, less that 1% of natural flavors, citric acid (provides tartness) vitamin c, grape skin extract (for color)

Saturday

Breakfast: Half of a bagel with peanut butter, glass of pineapple-orange juice, espresso with creamer, and a strawberry

Where: my apartment

When: 11:00AM

Why: Bagels are really quick to make in the mornings so that is always a plus, and it can be made many ways so I don’t get bored of them after I buy them. Sometimes I prefer espresso over plain coffee because it is not as much liquid so I don’t waste as many coffee beans.

Snack: -Tomato and basil hummus with Wheat Thins, glass of water

Where: apartment

When: around 2:00PM

Why: I really enjoy hummus because it is a unique flavor and goes well on crackers. It is also a departure from the usually cheese or dairy based dips that I sometimes eat for lunch. It is pretty normal for me to have a very light snack during the weekends and not a full lunch because I sleep in until 11:00 or such and therefore don’t need a full meal between breakfast and dinner.

-A couple of handfuls of popcorn, and a bag of gummy bears, bottle of water

Where: Movie Theater

When: 5:00PM

Why: Honestly, who doesn’t go to the movie theater and doesn’t have a snack or two. My friends bought popcorn and offered me some so I ate some that’s basically it.

Dinner: Left over Punjab Chicken on rice, a glass of milk

Where: apartment

When: around 7:30PM

Why: I usually make big dinners when I have time on certain week nights and then eat the left-overs when I am in a time crunch but do not feel like spending money or going out to get food.

Sunday:

Breakfast: Bagel with peanut butter, and low-fat yogurt, Coffee with Creamer, and milk

Where: apartment

When: around 11:00 a.m.

Why: Bagels and yogurt are really easy to make, which is a plus in the morning when I’m sleepy and haven’t had my cup of coffee yet.

Lunch: Wheat thins with hummus

Where: Comstock Hall

When: around 2:00 p.m.

Why: As I stated early, I really enjoy hummus because it’s flavorful and different from most dips.

Dinner: Cane’s 3 pieces Chicken fingers Combo meal with French fries and Texas toast, Root-beer

Where: Raising Cane’s on Washington Ave.

When: around 7:30 p.m.

Why: My friend and I were looking to go somewhere to eat, and it was close to her apartment.

-I also love Cane’s Chicken fingers so it was a win-win.
