..more Tums..

Thursday

Breakfast:
What: Bowl of Special K Red Berries with vanilla soy milk, Pre-natal vitamin, omeprazole
When/where: 8:30; at home.
Why: Cereal is easy in the morning. I can walk around with it. I like bagels, too, but the get cold if I have to stop to do something else. Special K ‘cause it’s the right amount of sweet.

Late a.m. snack:
What: Emerald Breakfast on-the-go! 1.5 oz. (trail mix/granola-type snack), 12 oz. water
When: after CSCL lecture, 11:30
Where: in the veteran’s Transition Center (VTC) on campus
Why: because the parasite inside me said it’s time for a snack

Lunch:
What: Small meatless pasta bowl, cibatta roll, 12 oz. water
When: around 12:30. I was going out to eat with a friend and we both had a long break in schedule.
Where: Noodles & Co.
Why:
1.) I knew they had a veggie option I like and my friend was sick of sandwiches.
2.) The MAIN reason was that I wanted to get out. It was a nice day, no ice on sidewalks. I really wanted the walk because I have had little opportunity to walk outside safely this winter.
3.) I wanted a hot lunch (not sandwich, salad..)
I usually bag lunch for $$ reasons, but I just got paid and had only eaten lunch out twice this semester. My friend and I had light homework loads, so it was nice to take our time and not rush. It was a “treat” for all these reasons.

After lunch:
What: 12 oz. Cherry Coke
When: immediately after returning from lunch, 1:30
Where: VTC
Why:
1.) I crave sugar after meals (only since pregnancy)
2.)I was tired and wanted caffeine
(Note: before pregnancy, I hadn’t touched sugar pop or caffeine drinks for over 3 years)

p.m. snack:
What: Ritz crackers with cheddar cheese, at least 2 glasses of water, a few oz. leftover Vitamin Water XXX, ¼ leftover chocolate-cherry malt from Annie’s Parlour, 4 xtra-strength Tums
When/where: I got home from running errands, about 4:30p.m.
Why: time to snack, wanted to use leftovers. Malt was because I crave sugar after eating (pregnancy)

At least 2 glasses more water throughout the evening… more Tums…

Dinner:
What: 2 cuties, butternut squash ravioli frozen dinner, 1 cup steamed veggies, 2+ glasses of water
When/where: 8:30, home
Why: My husband had plans, so I was eating alone. Wasn’t hungry, but OB says I have to eat at regular meal times even if I am not hungry.

After dinner:
2 swigs of dark chocolate almond milk because I crave chocolate after meals!

Bedtime :
Slow Fe iron supplement because I am anemic

Middle of the night:
What: peanut butter and chocolate sandwich on wheat bread, glass of water
When: after midnight sometime
Why: don’t judge me

Friday

Breakfast:
What: 2 bowls multigrain Cheerios with banana sliced on top and vanilla soy milk, pre-natal vitamin, omeprazole.
Where/when: home; 9:30
Why: easy, fast, tastes good.

Lunch:
What: Fresh fruit pieces, 5 slices of Papa John’s extra cheese pizza with evil garlic butter, 1.5 cans Cherry Coke, 8 oz. water
Where/when: VTC, 12:00
Why: Because it was free.

Several glasses of water throughout the afternoon..

Dinner:
What: cheese, crackers, blueberries, with cream cheese. 4 glasses of water, strawberry cupcake
Where/when: home; 7:30
Why: because it was easy and available and I wasn’t hungry enough for a full meal.

Evening snack:
What: 4 cuties
Where/when: home; 10:00
Why: they are cheap, taste great, and have vitamin C (many sick people around me lately.)

Bedtime:
Slow Fe iron supplement because I am anemic

Saturday

Breakfast:
What: 1 bowl multigrain cheerios with blueberries and banana on top and vanilla soy milk, pre-natal vitamin, omeprazole

Where: on campus VTC, at my baby shower
When: 12:30-1:30 or more for the eating part
Why: This meal was planned by my hostesses. I got to choose the delivery, and I chose Potbelly because they have hot sandwiches and (unlike pizza) everyone can get different things.

Four Tums at 6:00

Two glasses of water

Dinner:
What: Broccoli in garlic sauce, water
Where: Canton Garden Restaurant
When: after John got home from work, 7:20
Why: we were both too exhausted to cook; I wanted something with vegetables and no dairy; it’s close to home and it was getting close to closing time for other places

Four more Tums at 8:45

Bedtime snack:
What: Peanut butter and chocolate sandwich on wheat; water
Where/when: home; 11:30
Why: I wasn’t super hungry, but I knew I would wake up hungry in the next 2 hours. Best to preemptively strike

Bedtime :

3 days of food (and booze...)

Thursday

9:00 am – at home

ate: Vanilla Chobani Greek Yogurt with a cup of Nature’s Path Flax Multibran cereal and a banana.

drank: water

On Thursdays I run before school, meaning I eat breakfast a little later. Greek yogurt is the only yogurt that I eat because 1) it’s delicious 2) has lots of protein and keeps me full.

1:00 pm – at the Wilson library

ate: 1 organic golden delicious apple, 1 peanut butter clif zbar (like a mini clif bar)

drank: 16 oz Dunn Bros coffee

I try not to buy food during the days in effort to save money, but always cave to buying coffee. This particular coffee seemed particularly justified because I didn’t have any with breakfast.

4:00 pm – in class

ate: Food Should Taste Good brand olive tortilla chips.

These were also brought from home. They are addicting.

7:30 pm – at home

ate: brown rice couscous and chickpeas with spinach, tomatoes, kalamata olives and feta.

drank: water and a Great Divide Belgian IPA

I hadn’t had any vegetables all day, so I loaded them into this meal. Seriously, I wilted an entire bag of spinach. I feel a little bad buying tomatoes right now, because they are so out of season and are shipped from Mexico, but I really wanted some.

FRIDAY

5:30 am – at work

drank: 8 oz coffee

I drank this at Rustica Bakery, where I work. I got up at 4:30, but work was too busy to eat anything and I never feel right eating breakfast before 5 am.  A note about the coffee- it’s roasted locally in town, and all beans are bought directly from the farmers who cultivate them.

7:15 am – at work

ate: Vanilla Chobani Greek Yogurt, walnuts, ½ cup of Nature’s Path Flax Multibran cereal.

            drank: 8 oz coffee

After being up since 4:30 and running around for the past near-3 hours, I’ve worked up an appetite for breakfast and finally have a chance to sit down and take a break. You may wonder why I bring my own breakfast when I work at a bakery, but let me assure you – you’d be sick of baked goods too after working in a bakery for 5 years.

11:00 am – at work

ate – slice of Fruit and Nut bread, made with raisins and walnuts.

My midmorning snack.

1:30 pm – home

ate: olive roll with some Manchego cheese, 1 organic golden delicious apple

            drank: water

I grabbed the roll from work.

7:00 pm – at restaurant

ate: slices of 3 pizzas –

- with mushrooms and truffle cheese and truffle salt

- with broccoli rabe, feta, kalamata olives and almonds

- with butternut squash, spaghetti squash, taleggio and sage

arugula salad

drank: 2 glasses of Tempranillo (red wine)

I went out to dinner to Pizzeria Lola with my Mom and my Sister-in-Law. This pizza is SO GOOD. We split the three, and I got to take home all the leftovers.

11:00 pm – at bar

            drank: 10 oz Lagunitas Gnarlywine

Out with boyfriend at Pracna, where they have a great happy hour every night. This beer (or barleywine, rather) was boo-oozy.

SATURDAY

8:30 am – at home

            drank: 16 oz coffee, water

I bought this coffee from Dunn Bros, again. One of the perils of living right next store to a Dunn Bros and also working at a bakery / coffee shop is that you never feel the need to buy beans and make coffee at home.

11:30 am – at home

ate: ½ cup oatmeal cooked with 1 banana, blueberries, cinnamon and salt, then added some honey almond butter at the end

            drank: herbal tea

This is my favorite food. Ever. And keeps me full for hours. The oats I used were organic old fashioned oats, and it was natural peanut butter.

4:00 pm – at home

            ate: 2 carrots

These were two real carrots, not two baby carrots. Baby carrots are such a waste.

5:30 pm– Kings Wine Bar

            drank: glass of garnacha

Met some friends for happy hour. After traveling through Spanish Wine Country last summer, they’re now the only type of red wine I want to drink.

7:30 pm– at boyfriend’s house

ate: leftover Pizzeria Lola pizza (1 of each 3 types, just like last night’s dinner)

            drank: more wine!

Leftover pizza is always better. Surdyks was having their spring wine sale and I went and spent too much money.

Five meals a day keeps the doctor away.

Wed:

Breakfast 9am, home: Eggs, whole wheat toast, kiwi, protein shake, Daily supplements (fish oils, D, Bs) -- Trying to get back onto my five meal a day diet this year. Putting on weight so I need all the protein I can get (130g/day). Trying to get around 3-4k cal/day.
Snack 12.30, school: Apple, cliff bar (peanut butter and chocolate) -- Carb, fruit and some protein to make it through to lunch
Lunch 2.15, school: Salomi sandwich with peppers and an olive spread -- A little high in sodium, but it works well in combination with my workouts. Protein, carbs.
Snack 4, class: Jamba Juice (Peanut butter mood and protein sup) -- Protein intake and roughly 1k cal
Dinner 7, home: Salmon (sauteed with low sodium soy sauce), rice and dried nori. Protein shake and two glasses of milk. -- Good fish oils, protein, calcium

Thurs:
Breakfast 8.30, home: Oatmeal, whole wheat toast, banana, protein shake. Daily supplements (fish oils, D, Bs) -- Oatmeal <3. Whole wheat always good when available, fruit and my protein intake and daily sups (I hear they're good for you!)
Snack 12.30, school: Protein bar (don't remember brand) -- Protein and get through to lunch
Lunch 2.15, school: Pasta dish with marinara sauce, red/yellow peppers, penne and sausage. -- Carbs but still has some meat for protein. I brought this from home.
Dinner 6, friend's appt: Pizza (mom and pop shop and I was with a friend :p): fresh mots, tomatoes, artichokes, olives red sauce. -- Friend treated me to a meal but she picked a good pizza with a lot of great stuff on it. Low on grease, 'twas good.
Late night snack 12.30, home: Protein shake, pasta with linguine, shrimp and Alfredo sauce. -- I was getting hungry again when I got home so I made some food, courtesy of Bertollis brand.

Fri:
Breakfast 9, home: Smart Start cereal, banana, protein shake. Daily supplements (fish oils, D, Bs) -- Low on time today so I went with cereal, but still got in my fruit, protein and sups.
Snack: Skipped today (slept in :( ) -- Woops
Lunch 11.15: Meal at United Noodle (you should check it out for authentic Chinese/Japanese cuisine): Pork, rice, pickled ginger, mushrooms, tea -- No really, this place is awesome so go check it out. Right off of 94 on the West Bank.
Snack 3, at work: Apple with peanut butter, Mochi with red bean paste. -- Needed something at work to keep me over until dinner. Peanut butter added a bit of sustenance to my apple and the mochis I had purchased from United Noodle.

Dinner 9, at home: Gyoza (pot-stickers), rice, strawberries, glass of milk, protein shake -- Stopped by my moms house and my grandma had made some Gyoza for me to take home. I just made some rice when I got to my house and added in my fruit, protein and calcium.

Articles on the same news piece use varying rhetoric. The first seems like she left within hours of birth. Here's the Yahoo! Friday and the Yahoo! via AP Saturday. If you search, others make her sound like a hero.
The Yahoo user comments are just as interesting. Angry moms, dads with unexpert opinions, and, of course, proud Texans.

Food Diary

Thursday March 3rd:
Breakfast(8:15am)-
Glass of Kemps Select skim milk
Why: I woke up late. Kemps Select because it said the cows weren't given growth hormones. I honestly have no idea what that means for my health but it was only .30 cents more..

In Class Snack(9:45am)-
"Everything" bagel and veggie cream cheese
Why: Tastes good. Easy to pack at home and take on the run

After Class (4pm)-
12 oz French Roast Coffee.
Why: I don't know anything about coffee other than the fact that I need it to survive. French roast sounds sophisticated and I like other french things, like the language and in theory the country. Sound stupid, but it's true.

Home (7pm)-
Slice of Pepper Jack Cheese
Activia Yougurt
Cheeze- Its
Why: I hadn't gone grocery shopping, and coffee kills my appetite.

Late Night (10pm):

3 Dove Chocolates
Why: I like eating when I watch TV, especially chocolate. My mom sent these in a care package, they are my favorites because they have stupid cheesy sayings written inside the wrapper and they melt in your mouth.

Friday March 4th, 2011

Breakfast(9:00am)
-
Bowl of Special K and dried strawberries
Why: My mom gave me a box of Special K last time I went home.

Lunch (1:00pm)-
Everything bagel and cream cheese
Cheeze-Its
Why: Tastes good and easy to quick bring with to work.

Dinner (9:00 pm)
Grilled Cheese /w Jalapenos
Activia Yogurt
Why: My mom gave me the yogurt last time I went home and I like grilled cheese.

Late Night (11pm) -

Vodka Cranberry
Shot of (repulsive) rootbeer liqour
Glass of wine
Why: My friends chose and bought all of the above. I like vodka cranberries and the wine was good, but peer pressure definitely was a factor in the rootbeer shot. ugh.

Friday March 5th, 2011

Breakfast (9am)

Cream filled donut with chocolate frosting
Orange Juice
Why: My manager donuts brought them into work, I was late, it was the last one.

Lunch (12:00)-

4 snack size Kit Kats
Why: I forgot to pack lunch, didn't feel like spending money, was to lazy to walk somewhere and my co-worker brought a big bag of them in to work.

Dinner (8pm)
-
8 Boneless Buffalo Wings
Ranch Dressing
Celery Sticks
Milk
Why: Drove home to my parents house after work, that's what they were having.

Saturday March 6th, 2011.

Breakfast 11am
Pillsbury Toaster Strudel with Icing
Eggo Chocolate Chip Waffle
2 Glasses of 1% Milk
Why: Because I was home for the first weekend in a while and my mom always buys yummy junk breakfast foods. It tastes good and I have a sweet tooth.

Lunch (2pm)
kettle style potato chips
Dean's Fench onion dip
Diet coke
M&M's
Why: my favorite snacks.

Dinner 6pm
Roast Turkey
Mashed Potatoes
Stove-Top Turkey Stuffing
Pillsbury crescent rolls
Some kind of white Wine
Why: It's what my family made for dinner.

Late Night (10pm)
Chocolate Cupcakes
Why: My little brother made them and offered me one. It was awesome so I ate two.

This is the first time I have ever really taken the time to reflect on my diet and daily food intake. It made me aware that sometimes factors other than the taste or ingredients influence the decisions I make, such as packaging. I also realized that a lot of time my choices have to do with convenience, cravings, what I can eat on the go, and what has been provided for or given to me. My diet is very situational, and what I eat depends on who I am with or what has been put in front of me. I realized that I don't always make very active choices when it comes to what I eat, and I don't think that's a good thing.

Blog Posting #5 (due Sunday 3/6, 11:59 P.M.): FOOD JOURNAL!

Next week, we begin our study of food. This week's blog post -- a "food journal" -- will set up our work and give us a place to start. Here's how to proceed:
Choose
two to three days (preferably three), between now and Sunday, and during those days, keep track of everything you eat and drink (or, as I so colorfully put it, pretty much "everything you put in your mouth"!). You'll probably want to carry some kind of pad or notebook around with you, so you can record as you go.

Specifically, keep track of:

a) what you eat (ingredients? brands? how much? etc.);

b) when you eat it (at what times? how regularly? how does eating fit into the rhythm/arrythym of your work days? and your non-work days?);

c) where you eat it (at home? bag lunch in the office? fast food? local community-owned cafe? where you do spend your money, and how much?); and

4) why you eat it (simply, not metaphysically -- for example, "I ate at McDonald's because I had a class in 20 minutes and it was the only restaurant that was around/could serve me fast enough/I could afford.").

At the end of those two or three days, record your results here on the blog. Probably best to do it in chronological order, event by event, day by day.

Finally, comment on at least one other food journal (preferably more than one, if you have time!), analyzing your colleagues' food-lives and seeing what kind of insights you can draw. Use part one of The Omnivore's Dilemma (the reading assignment for next Tuesday) to guide you.

And of course, get in touch with your colleagues and/or me if you have any questions. Happy eating!
